Many organisations have defined needs for off road driving capabilities for all, or some, of their drivers. Our off road courses offer delegates the opportunity to experience the off road environment and to develop a range of safe approaches to common issues.

Off road driver training enables employers to comply with certain aspects of their duty of care obligations with regards to the safe operation of specialist vehicles.

Additional benefits of this course include:

  • Improved driver awareness, confidence and skill
  • Promotion of a more professional approach to driving and road safety
  • Demonstration of corporate commitment to relevant health & safety standards

Events: off road 4x4 training

Varied times, including full and half day

IAM Drive & Survive developed this course to equip drivers with the knowledge and experience required to make the most appropriate judgements, and employ the safest practices, whilst using 4x4 vehicles -both on and off road.

Off road 4x4 training helps to raise the participant's awareness of dynamic attributes specific to the 4x4 vehicle, and how these potentially affect the level of road risk the driver is exposed to. It encourages a safe and systematic approach to driving on and off road, with particular emphasis being placed on the thought processes that should be employed when making the transfer from one surface to another.

About the course

4x4 vehicles have very different dynamic attributes to conventional road cars. IAM Drive & Survive recognises this and has developed a dedicated course for this purpose which:

  • Provides an overview of the main technical features of the 4x4 vehicle that set it apart from the conventional car
  • Teaches specific off-road control techniques required to maintain traction and safe progress in a variety of conditions, and over a variety of surfaces
  • Summarises typical high-risk situations to which drivers of 4x4 vehicles are exposed
  • Demonstrates specific techniques to neutralise some of the on-road adverse handling attributes of the typical 4x4 caused by difference in chassis design and manufacturers' specifications
  • Addresses areas of individual concern, as defined by the driver with particular regard to the safe use of 4x4, both on and off road.

Events: Skid control training

Varied times, including full and half day

The IAM Drive & Survive Skid control training focuses on understanding skids, the drivers involvement and how to prevent them.

In a safe environment, delegates are able to explore a range of common scenarios and apply straightforward skid management techniques to reduce the consequences that may occur in a real scenario.

About the course

Safety of participants is paramount in Skid control training. IAM Drive & Survive operates inherently safe, purpose-built skid cars in a low speed environment that aids confidence. This provides participants with the opportunity to safely repeat and master specific skid scenarios.

Skid control training from IAM Drive & Survive has real practical applications in the business environment and makes a vital contribution to workplace safety.

Events: Emergency reaction training

Varied times, including full and half day

Emergency reaction training (ERT) focuses on equipping delegates with the skills to use their ABS system to maximum efficiency which:

  • Provides the delegate with an understanding of the technology available
  • Demonstrates the effectiveness and capability of ABS
  • Utilises the full features of ABS and its effectiveness on driving performance

Many drivers are unaware of the benefits of ABS and this course allows them to explore these in a safe environment.

Experiencing ABS in a controlled environment using a normal car in a traffic light system, gives the driver confidence and clarity.

ABS familiarisation training

During the ABS session, the driver is encouraged to approach a set of emergency reaction lights. The lights are remotely controlled from within the vehicle by the trainer, who will direct the participant to either stop or swerve, in order to avoid a line of cones.

With ABS now standard on all new motor vehicles it is important to understand how it works and more importantly its limitations, i.e. the driver!

Events: Electronic stability programme training

Varied times, including full and half day

Electronic stability programme (ESP) training focuses on equipping delegates with the skills to use their ESP system to maximum efficiency which:

  • Allows delegates to fully understand the dynamics of ESP
  • Ensures staff are fully trained on the effectiveness of ESP
  • Ensures cars fitted with ESP are used efficiently but safely
  • Ensures your drivers are better trained and safer drivers

Electronic stability programme (ESP) function is now being fitted to every saloon car and soon most cars will have this.

ESP includes ABS to manage breaking skids but also helps manage steering induced skids.

IAM Drive and Survive offers a safe environment to appreciate how ESP can help to manage steering induced skids. A traffic-light system for this kind of training helps to aid driver confidence and clarity.
