Many organisations have defined needs for off road driving capabilities for all of some of their drivers.

Specifically, this course helps to raise the participant's awareness of the particular dynamic attributes of the 4x4 vehicle and how this potentially affects the level of road risk the driver is exposed to.

4x4 vehicles have very different dynamic attributes to conventional road cars. IAM Drive & Survive recognises this and has developed a dedicated course for the purpose which helps to:

  • Protect your people, your vehicles and other road users
  • Demonstrate commitment to road safety
  • Increase fuel efficiency
  • Develop a greater understanding of how the vehicle can be used, it's capabilities and limitations
  • Increase driver knowledge and confidence
  • Reduce vehicle repair and maintenance costs
  • Ensure employers comply with certain aspects of their duty of care obligations with regards to the safe operation of these specialist vehicles
  • Establish safe and best practice
  • Real world training with qualified, registered instructors

About the course

Although many of the hints and tips in the advanced coaching course for cars apply here, there is a strong focus on the reason for the handling compromises associated 4x4 vehicles.

The course includes the following:

  • Overview of main technical features of a 4x4 vehicle that set it apart from a conventional car
  • Overview of typical high-risk situations to which drivers of 4x4 vehicles are exposed
  • Specific off-road control techniques required to maintain traction and safe progress in a variety of conditions and over a variety of surfaces
  • Specific techniques to neutralise some of the on-road adverse handling attributes of the typical 4x4 caused by adaptions to chassis design and manufacturers' specifications

This thorough knowledge ensures delegates develop a safe and systematic approach to driving 4x4 vehicles safely both on and off road, with particular emphasis being placed on the thought processes that should be employed when transferring from one surface to another.

The trainer will also briefly explain the effects of some of the 4x4-specific mechanical devices that are likely to be fitted to the vehicle and how they can potentially influence safety, economy and handling.

This equips drivers with the tools they need to make the most appropriate judgements and employ the safest practices whilst using 4x4 vehicles both on and off road.

IAM Drive & Survive can also offer the following related courses:

  • 4x4 on the job training
  • 4x4x self recovery and winching
