Confined space manoeuvring has been developed by IAM Drive & Survive to help improve drivers' hazard and risk management skills – which are vital when manoeuvring in restricted areas.

With particular reference to low speed manoeuvring and shunting, the primary objective of this course is to reduce the participants' vulnerability to driving-related incidents, as well as reducing the associated liability of the employer.

In addition to this, other benefits of the training include:

  • Helping reduce driver stress levels
  • Enabling drivers to think, look and plan ahead
  • Reducing costs associated with low speed manoeuvring
  • Limiting wear and tear on vehicles
  • Assisting drivers to develop skills to accurately judge the dimensions of their vehicles.
  • Helping drivers develop sound planning and decision-making skills
  • Avoiding unknown or unreported damage
  • Reducing third party claims for injury / damage
  • Better control of insurance premiums
  • Reducing number of minor incidents

About the course

The course will provide drivers with the strategies necessary to address typical problems associated with low speed manoeuvring and shunting in confined spaces.

Drivers will be given the opportunity to participate in on-site manoeuvring exercises for articulated and rigid vehicles, allowing them to put the theory into practise. This exercise will also enable drivers to learn the correct use of signals between themselves and a guide, whilst manoeuvring in a confined space.

If applicable, the trainer will also observe the driver uncoupling and coupling the trailer and assess whether this is performed in a safe and systematic manner - providing relevant feedback and guidance where required.

Upon completion of the course the driver will be given the opportunity for a full debrief – and complete a specific report designed for Confined space manoeuvring.
