About the course

This specifically designed course provides a retrospective review of a driving-related incident and generates a constructive approach for the participant to respond to and regain confidence.

Participants are asked to review the incident and establish the following:

  • Actions taken by the driver
  • Actions taken by third party (if any)
  • Constructive points to be noted
  • Agree training required
  • Could this accident have been prevented? If so, how?

Using the report provided, the incident will then be reconstructed. The participant will be encouraged to identify learning points and any actions that could have been taken to reduce the severity of the incident.

The second part of the course is an on-road training session where the trainer will observe the participant's general driving style. Where possible the incident site will be revisited or a suitable similar site located and the actions of other road users will be observed to establish any inherent problems. The trainer will then drive through the identified site from all available approaches giving a supporting dialogue in relation to the incident detail. The participant will also then drive the same route, assisted with hazard management by the trainer.

A short discussion will be conducted after the on-road training session. On completion, a general revision of the participant's drive will follow to build on the previous session and where possible to revisit similar scenarios and establish that no inherent problems exist due to the nature of the incident.

Post incident assessor course

2 days for delegates who have already attended an advanced driving course
3 days for delegates who have not attended an advanced driving course

Increasingly, organisations are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of utilising existing members of staff as 'incident assessors'.

As a result, IAM Drive & Survive has designed this course to:

  • Demonstrate duty of care and a commitment to road safety
  • Help identify causes of incidents
  • Reduce risk of future incidents
  • Promote safety awareness and risk management skills
  • Reduce driver vulnerability and help keep drivers safer on the road

Incident assessors take a degree of responsibility for ensuring, internally, that any moves towards developing a driver safety culture within the organisation are promoted at a practical and observable level.

They also provide a direct link to the Fleet Risk Management department of IAM Drive & Survive, which in turn, can provide ideas, interventions and practical solutions to address particular areas of organisational concern; which may include statistical analyses of claims experience, support materials and seminars .

Whilst 'assessor' training from IAM Drive & Survive prepares individuals to carry out a number of roles, it does not bestow any formal or externally validated qualification upon them, although successful completion of the course will be dependant on the passing of a test of retained knowledge.

The post assessor course benefits an organisation by:

  • Providing the organisation with a point of reference – almost expert in this field
  • Allowing instant management of incident reporting to be analysed
  • Giving the employer some credibility amongst its driving workforce
  • Helping to manage costs
  • Providing hints and tips in the general accepted environment
  • Working towards changing driver culture and/or attitude
  • Helping drivers become more thoughtful in their actions
  • Helping an organisation look at Driver Risk Management and their business risk exposure
