The IAM Drive & Survive UK familiarisation course aims to give those drivers who have had little or no on-road experience in the UK the basic information required to drive competently and safely.

This one-day course will expose the candidates to various road types and allow them to experience the majority of UK scenarios with the benefit of an expert alongside. This reduces the exposure and risk for both non-UK drivers and the organisations employing them, and also demonstrates duty of care for overseas employees whilst driving in the UK.

This course aims to build the delegate's driving confidence and understanding of correct UK procedures in order to stay safe in all driving circumstances. The training style is relaxed and non intimidating and there is no formal test involved – ensuring all participants can benefit from this course

Additional benefits of this course include:

  • Improved driver awareness, confidence and skill
  • Promotion of a more professional approach to passenger safety
  • Maintaining positive customer relations and an organisation's reputation
  • Demonstrating a commitment to road safety
  • Developing an understanding of UK law and regulations – as per the highway code
  • Reduction in stress and driving related fatigue

To help delegates drive as safely and efficiently on UK roads as possible, the course covers key information on the following:

  • Road signs and markings
  • Speed limits
  • Licence requirements
  • Traffic regulations
  • Highway Code
  • Managing roundabouts
  • Dealing with junctions
  • Joining, using and exiting motorways and dual carriageways

The course is split into two parts:

  1. The first is a tutorial providing useful information to delegates, explaining the principal cultural differences between the UK approach to driving, and that often adopted elsewhere in the world.
  2. The second part covers on-road practical training. Supervised by an experienced, ADI-qualified trainer, this element attempts to give practical experience of the topics covered in the tutorial.

The trainer will periodically ask relevant questions to gauge the level of information retained from the tutorial and help re-enforce the messages contained within it.
